This is a reproduction of the
detached quarters of the Ueno family, where novelist Soseki Natsume
boarded when he came to Matsuyama to teach English. Shiki Masaoka
once lived here together with him for a short while, and opened haiku
poetry gatherings. Here, it seems, Soseki found spiritual awakening
to his art. Soseki called the house Gudabutsuan. Gudabutsu means a
stupid Buddha in Japanese. He lived upstairs and Shiki lived
downstairs.
