←ぼくが持っているヴィーナス。と言っても、高さ7ｃｍほどの、食玩（コレクト倶楽部）のフィギュア。

　『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』を読んでいて、語源の説明に出会いました。

His best guess was that a naked human form was yet another endorsement of Venus----the goddess of human sexuality. Although modern culture had erased much of Venus's association with the male/female physical union, a sharp etymological eye could still spot a vestage of Venus's original meaning in the word "venereal". (p.63)

　venereal は「性病の」という意味（性病は venereal disease）ですが、その語源がヴィーナスとは！！　恥ずかしながら、知りませんでした。ねえ、あのミロのヴィーナスが性病、ねえ。ふうううん。

　　"The word Sangreal derives from San Greal--or Holy Grail. But in its most ancient form, the word Sangreal was divided in a different spot!" Teabing wrote on a piece of scrap paper and handed it to her. She read what he had written.

　　Instantly, Sophie recognized the translation.
　　Sang Real literally meant Royal Blood. (p.336)

　これを読んだとき、直感的に本当か、と疑ったのです。あまりにも出来過ぎなので。そこで、もっとも信頼できる英語の辞書（英語の辞書については以前に特集しましたね。）のOED を見てみたのですが、最初の方に、

　The pseudo-etymological form sang real (confusing the word with sang-royal ) appears in AF. of the 15th c.

と書いてあって、昔からあるウソだとわかります。このあたりは、ダン・ブラウンも知っていて書いているのでしょうが、読者はだまされてはいけません。語源説にはいいかげんなものもあるので注意しないといけませんね。

　次は、日本語訳もあるし、ぼくはこっちの方が好きなのですが、『天使と悪魔』からです。

They were renowned not only for their brutal killingsk, but also for celebrating their slayings by plunging themselves into drug-induced stupors. Their drug of choice was a potent intoxicant they called hashish.
　　As their notoriety spread, these lethal men became konwn by a single word--Hassassins--literally "the followers of hashish.".....The word was still used todayk, even in modern English...
　　It was now pronounced assassin.(pp.31-32)

　この語源は実は知っていました。『毒薬の話』（中公新書）という本を昔読んだことがありますが、その中に書いてあったと思います。そして、このようなことがマルコ・ポーロの『東方見聞録』の中に書いてあると、書いてあったので、実際に確かめた記憶があります。（まあ、最近記憶力が落ちていますから、違っているかもしれません。今、手もとに『毒薬の話』もないので確かめられません。）

　ついでに、前号でシェイクスピアの話をしましたが、シェイクスピアが初出例（その単語が文献に見出せるもっとも古い実用例）である語のひとつが assassination という名詞形で、出典は、『マクベス』です。
