Message of Shigeru Uchida
Chairman of Japan Aikido Association

2003
"Is Aikido a sports ?" or "What is the difference between Budo and Sports ?"Such questions are frequently asked. In most cases the questions are usually asked by the people who believe Aikido(Budo) should never be a sports.
There is a clear difference in the historical views between Japanese Budo which had been developed from the killing combat in the fields and Western Sports which had started from playing models of people. In Japan so called "Hundreds of Martial Arts", many practical martial arts had been developed in the Sengoku Era. And in the Tokugawa Era of long-lasting peaceful time, with the strong influence of Jukyou Thought, the Martial Arts had highly developed to be the sophisticated status of Samurai Spirit rather than the traditional killing techniques in the wartime era. And the learning of Shisho Gokyou (Chinese traditional textbooks) was one of the both wheels with the martial arts for Samurai class to be estimated as sophisticated leaders (Bunbu Lyoudou). In the present age without any practical combat, the Japanese Sword (called as the soul of Samurai) still now is emitting the strong light as traditional articrafts.
The number of techniques of the Daitou-liu which is the origin of present Aikido was more than several thousands. But the number was counted from the point of views facing many practical combat cases. Nowadays, we can classify them into some categories from the principle of dynamics and physiology.
In order to realize the techniques of Aikido in our contemporary age, once being the techniques of killing, we must prepare the competition field where players can fight with each other in the even state. Then, which is stronger, present player of Kendo or Musashi Miyamoto ? Or which would win, if they fight, present Judoka or that of Takeuchi-liu and Kitou-liu ? Sanshirou Sugata who is hero of the famous novel, I think, could give us the answer on the predicted results.
The Competition Aikido has provided the field of competition of hands against weapon, besides that of weapon versus weapon and hands versus hands. In the case of modern competition, the competition is practised under the limited rule of even conditions. Sanshirou Sugata will show us the balance of demerits of limitation and merits of technical progress induced by the competition rules.
Japan Aikido Association has provided the field of estimation by Kata competition, besides the field of Randori competition. The beautiful Flowery is to be required for Kata, but not too much floweries. The accurate techniques are needed being very faithful to the fundamental arts. And the natural form "Katachi" could be achieved through the training of the fixed form "Kata". That is the most sophisticated Embu of Aikido. The Randori competition and the Embu competition as the both wheels will complete the Aikido of Japan Aikido Association.
