4. Beyond the dualism

Even if you have enough power to be superior to others, it is not sufficient to be responsible to them. It is necessary to provide order to others. For this purpose we need the standpoint to reflect ourselves. But do American people have this point? Henry David Thoreau pointed out the limit of observation within human made system.

I know that most men think differently from myself; but those whose lives are by profession devoted to the study of these or kindred subjects content me as little as any. Statesmen and legislators, standing so completely within the institution, never distinctly and nakedly behold it. They speak of moving society, but have no resting-place without it. They may be men of a certain experience and discrimination, and have no doubt invented ingenious and even useful systems, for which we sincerely thank them; but all their wit and usefulness lie within certain not very wide limits. They are wont to forget that the world is not governed by policy and expediency. (Civil Disobedience)

Most of American people regard their democratic rule as universal for the world. We can find much expectation to human technology but they do not know well how to make good use of it for others and utilize only for their own purpose. Some American people regard individual freedom guarantees the order of our world automatically but it is not true. As long as you are not God, human behavior without rule leads us devastation. Why some people fall into poverty in spite of enlarging material richness? Why do some races struggle each other? You may say they are so silly that cannot rule them. But if so, why they had been able to enjoy the peaceful life even if not so rich in old days. What did break their society? The people who fall into dualism cannot be aware of this problem.

For example, many American people are indulged in money game that is a zero-sum game and do not benefit others. We can get much information how to get money but do not have the information of money itself. Mr. Bernard Lietaer points out this problem from economic points and reflects our money itself. He has a healthy sprit of the spirit of Kritik in the sense of Deutsch Idealisms (German Idealism). We cannot answer above questions. But how many American notice this kind of economical problem?

We cannot recognize others pain without similar experience. But if we find some pain common to others, we will be abele to cooperate to act each other.

How can a man be satisfied to entertain and opinion merely, and enjoy it? Is there any enjoyment in it, if his opinion is that he is aggrieved? If you are cheated out of a single dollar by your neighbor, you do not rest satisfied with knowing you are cheated, or with saying that you are cheated, or even with petitioning him to pay you your due; but you take effectual steps at once to obtain the full amount, and see to it that you are never cheated again. Action from principle, the perception and the performance of right, changes things and relations; it is essentially revolutionary, and does not consist wholly with anything which was. It not only divided States and churches, it divides families; ay, it divides the individual, separating the diabolical in him from the divine. (Civil Disobedience)

It is the most significant misfortunate both for American and others that some human emotions are divided among different people. Most of people who enjoy the prosperity in this country are whites or some Asian. For minorities like African American or Hispanic the chance to success is limited. But it is true that they have taken charge of the deep mind of this country.

Now I teach Japanese in Jarvis Christian College, most of whose students is African American. It is fortunate for me because I can experience American deep mind which contains the sense of tragedy. I participated in some ceremony in this place and felt another tradition that cannot be found from economical prosperity. They have the power to overcome their destiny even if they aware of their sadness. But it is what is lacked mostly in this country. I also experience some other kinds of society. It represents human hope and sometimes tolerance that is most essential virtue for our society. Surely I will not deny them. But is true that we cannot notice the sincere value of hope without the experience of sadness.

If we do not experience something negative, we will not be able to find the standpoint to reflect ourselves. But the negative aspect of this country has been forced to minorities who are alienated from American prosperity. Here is the inner side of dualistic problem. As long as this country ruled who are indifferent to the sense of tragedy, their diplomatic or economical policy stays in ignorance to others pain. It means they cannot take charge of American responsibility to other countries. Who can take others responsibility if cannot noticed their own?

What American people should do is not to sympathize or despite other countries because of their misery. It is 'to know themselves'. It is also to inquire into themselves whether they say 'Let me remove the speck from your eye' in spite of your plank in your eye or whether they become Rabbi who ignored a beaten person. As the Jesus' age there are many people who read Bible but cannot recognize it. If you are Christian, you should confirm you are true Christian in front of misery neighbor.
