Stories of Shigenobu Adachi

Shigenobu Adachi was one of the important followers for Yoshiakira Kato. And he displayed his full talent of managing the construction work for the castle and the embankment works for Ishite River.

1. Getting the Castle Roof Tiles Up the Mountain

Adachi had a problem of moving the castle roof tiles up the mountain where the castle located. It was taking much too long carrying them up so he had the idea of making three human chains and passing the tiles up from person to person. In that way he got the job done in one day.

2. Adachi Motivated the Workers at the Iwazeki Construction Site

On the occasion of constructing Matsuyama Castle, a course of the Ishite River was changed toward southwest in order to defend the castle town from a flood. For that purpose, the rocky riverbank about 200 meters in length was broken to pieces manually by many workers.

When they were digging through the rock at Iwazeki to change the course of the Ishite River, the work went very slowly. Farmers and other workers were forced to go during lunch and help dig and they were not very enthusiastic. Adachi had the brilliant idea of giving the workers the same amount of rice as the stone that they dug out. From then, the worker were much more eager and motivated and the work went quickly!

3. Adachi's Will

When Adachi was about to die, he asked his lord, Yoshiakira Kato, to bury him somewhere he could always see the castle as his will. Kato promised him to do it. After his departing, Kato buried him on a hill north of the castle as Adachi asked.
