In the morning, on my way to school, I always pass by the hill where the castle stands. And I enjoy the beautiful sight of the castle with fresh green in early summer. During the night, it is lighted up. And the castle appeals its gorgeous presence in the dark.

The castle is the most important sightseeing spot in our city. It is a symbol of the tourist city of Matsuyama and also is widely known one of the three multiple-wing castles in Japan which are built on flat-top mountains, the others being Wakayama Castle and Himeji Castle. Its donjons, as well as many of the gates and turrets for defense, are designated Important Cultural Properties.

The castle was destroyed by lightning in 1784 and the present donjon was reconstructed in 1820.

The small donjon, which is second in importance to the main donjon, was destroyed by fire in 1933 and was reconstructed in 1968.

If lightning strike the castle again, and it destroyed the building, not only I, but everyone in Matsuyama would feel sad, and would try to rebuild it again. Because if there is no castle in our city, it wouldn't be our city, Matsuyama.
